Games Organizing Committee
In partnership with Special Olympics Alberta, the goal of the Games Organizing Committee (GOC) is to provide a multi-sport competitive opportunity for athletes with an intellectual disability.
The GOC will strive to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants to celebrate sport, showcase community spirit and leave a legacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games Grande Prairie 2025
From July 11 to 13, 2025, approximately 1,100 athletes with an intellectual disability, along with 300 coaches and chaperones from across Alberta will travel to Grande Prairie to compete and gather as a community. These multi-sport games are an opportunity to celebrate sport, Special Olympics and Grande Prairie!
Our Legacy
Grande Prairie previously hosted the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games in February 2015, drawing over 700 participants. Currently, the Grande Prairie chapter of Special Olympics Alberta offers a variety of sports, including athletics, 5 pin bowling, floor hockey, curling, basketball, 10 pin bowling, swimming and bocce. As Grande Prairie prepares to host the Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games for the first time in 2025, there are ambitious plans to expand the local sports offerings. This includes the introduction of new sports such as speedskating, figure skating, and alpine skiing—traditionally winter sports, reflecting Grande Prairie's strong winter sports legacy, alongside the summer event. Additionally, there's a hopeful initiative to reactivate sports like powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, and cross-country skiing, further enriching the range of athletic opportunities available to athletes. This effort aligns with Grande Prairie's legacy goal for the 2025 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the community and its athletes by broadening the spectrum of sports and encouraging greater participation.
